Backyard Theater Recipe: Grub for Bugs

There's still several weekends of summer. Are the kids bugging you for something fun to do? To get the most "buzz" out of your Backyard Theater experience, we've put together some great ideas for theme-related movie nights. We've got kid-friendly recipes this month (and they can even help you with the prep!)

First pick a fun bug-themed movie. Some of our favorites are A Bug's Life, The Ant Bully and How to Eat Fried Worms. For a little younger crowd, you could go with Charlotte's Web. Now comes the fun part! Invite your friends and family to fly on over for an "infestation" of your back yard theater.

Bug Juice

Bug Juice is easily created with your favorite colorful punch or juice. Green or blue Gatorade works well, too. Just add gummy insects to the liquid in an ice cube tray, freeze and voila! Make plenty of cubes so the adults can get in on the fun, too. If you're using a punch bowl, you can make a larger ice ring using a bundt pan.

Worms in Dirt

Worms in Dirt is an all time favorite that the kids can assemble themselves. In individual clear plastic cups, layer chocolate pudding, a few gummy worms and crushed Oreo cookies. (Make sure the worms peek out a bit through the cookie layer for full effect.) You can add a bit of shredded coconut tinted green with food coloring for a little grass. If you're feeling very Martha Stewart, wrap each plastic spoon handle with a silk flower and a little green floral tape.
