So you're thinking of hosting a backyard theater
movie, but aren't quite sure what to show. You've got
a bunch of friends and neighbors heading over with
their families. Sure, you may let your kids watch
Star Wars, but what about your friends with
the 5 year-old? Is it appropriate? Here's a great
place to find out what others think.
Common Sense Media is a fantastic source for reviewing all kinds of media. From games and TV to of course movies. Everything on the site is rated by folks just like me and you. In fact, my wife has rated content up there too. If you're looking for something age appropriate, say 5 to 7 year-old appropriate movies, you click on the age button and off you go.
All media (games, movies, TV) are classified in three categories: Appropriate for All Ages, Know Your Kid and Not Age Appropriate. What's more, each movie provides suggested discussion items for parents to share with their kids. As an example, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope Common Sense Media excerpt:
Common Sense Note
Parents need to know that this 1977 movie comes in two versions: the original and the one released on DVD in 2004 that's augmented with more effects. Either one is a good introduction to the series for kids (the effects don't add much) if you decide to view them in the order they were made rather than the chronological order in which they're marketed now. Parents may notice something they didn't the first time around -- the human cast isn't all that diverse. Most are white males, and the princess stands out as the only strong female character. One bar scene features "space" drinking, smoking, and shady characters, resulting in the loss of one character's limb and the shooting death of another. Two supporting characters are killed fairly early on and shown as ash-like figures; a main character dies later. There are plenty of laser blasts and swordplay with lightsabers, although this entry is the tamest of the series.
So check it out. It's a great source for learning about movies and not finding yourself in a situation you weren't quite ready to explain. Sure Animal House is funny, but probably not the right show for the 7 year-old in your house, says Common Sense Media.
